Blogging for Books

Waterbrook Multonomah just invited me to start reviewing books for them through BloggingforBooks.com. I am so excited. I just requested a copy of The Charlatan’s Boy by Jonathan Rogers. Listen to some of these chapter titles: Chapter 1: In which I jump out of a box and play the Wild Man of the Feechiefen Swamp. Chapter 2:In which we get out of the feechie trade and I begin my formal education and Chapter 11: In which we meet the Blossom of Bonifay, the Chalkboard Bully, and the world’s most beautiful eighty-two-year-old. Here is the description from the publisher’s website:

“As far back as he can remember, the orphan Grady has tramped from village to village in the company of a huckster named Floyd. With his adolescent accomplice, Floyd perpetrates a variety of hoaxes and flimflams on the good citizens of the Corenwald frontier, such as the Ugliest Boy in the World act.
“It’s a hard way to make a living, made harder by the memory of fatter times when audiences thronged to see young Grady perform as “The Wild Man of the Feechiefen Swamp.” But what can they do? Nobody believes in feechies anymore.
“When Floyd stages an elaborate plot to revive Corenwalders’ belief in the mythical swamp-dwellers known as the feechiefolk, he overshoots the mark. Floyd’s Great Feechie Scare becomes widespread panic. Eager audiences become angry mobs, and in the ensuing chaos, the Charlatan’s Boy discovers the truth that has evaded him all his life—and will change his path forever.”

So a few weeks back I just added a short update saying life has been crazy. Basically after 9 months of unemployment, my husband was hired at a camp 600+ miles away and we decided to just pack up and leave. We both preferred to be back in the north and since unemployment was lower where we were headed than where we had been…well it seemed like an easy choice. So we put almost everything into storage, gave a bunch of stuff away and brought clothing and immediate needed stuff with us. We had a pretty calm summer in the white mountains of new hampshire at camp. Though I do not reccomend 5 people living in a 16×20 one bedroom cabin. When camp was over hubby was hired at a college pretty quickly. Rent is very expensive in this state and at this point we are living with an old friend of my husband’s and his family. These are virtual strangers to me. We do have plenty of space in our own area so that is a blessing. It can be very stressful at times to have 2 wives and mothers in one house because we do things differently. I don’t understand polygamysts and the whole “sister wives” thing….They must be holding alot of tension inside over sharing a home with other grown women. Anyway….we are trying to catch up on bills, get out of debt, save money and get into our own place but I doubt it will happen as quickly as I would like.

My Crazy Life.

So our summer was pretty crazy and things are finally starting to calm down so I am hoping I will be back on here again! I am late in getting started with school, just waiting for hubby to come back with some supplies and then I will be able to start today.

Breaking Free

I would like to know if I am the only sap doing this Bible Study by Beth Moore, who can’t get through a homework assignment without crying? Actually I am such a procrastinator that it’s usually a couple days of crying during the homework and then a few days keeping myself too busy with other things, and then a few days of cramming to try to get caught up. Which includes more crying because I am so frustrated with myself for keeping myself “too busy” for God.
I really am enjoying this study though and am hopeful that God is not through with me yet! This is a little of what I have learned so far-
“Captivity is anything that hinders the abundant and Spirit Filled life God has planned for his child.”
Benefits of being chosen by God:
1) To know God and believe Him.
2) To glorify God.
3)To find satisfaction in God.
4) To experience God’s peace.
5) To enjoy God’s presence.

Isaiah 57:14 “And shall say, Cast ye up, cast ye up, prepare the way, take up the stumbling block out of the way of my people.”

5 common obstacles:
1)Unbelief Maybe you believed and repented into salvation, but do you believe God’s promises for your life here on Earth? Mark 9:24
2)Pride Maybe you don’t think you have any real sin issues, you think you are a pretty good Christian and God is lucky to have you on his team!
3)Idolatry- Putting other things before God. This is a big one for me. I get so caught up with whatever is interesting to me in the moment, that I put prayer and Scripture on a back burner.
4)Prayerlessness- Goes hand in hand with #3
5)Legalism-Being more aware of others faults than loving others. Seeing the speck in your brother/sister’s eye, but ignoring the log in your own.

I went through Obstacle 3, 4, and 5 today ( I said I was catching up!) and I was led to write out some lies I have been believing that I need to daily give over to the Lord.

1) LIE-That momentarily releasing my anger onto my children ( or husband) will make me feel better and doesn’t so any lasting harm. TRUTH- It does not make me feel better, it makes me feel like scum and it obviously harms because my behaving in such a way is the result of my being surrounded by anger when I was a child. Now don’t get me wrong, I am not blaming my parents for my present behavior. I am an adult and I make my own choices. However, I learned certain sin-habits by watching others choose them, and my children are already making sinful choices based on how they see me behave.

2) LIE-Being disrespectful to my husband is not a big deal and does not have any consequences. TRUTH- It is a big deal because it is sin. Being saved does not let me off the hook, there are consequences such as an unhappy husband and disrespectful children. When I disrespect him, they think it is ok to disrespect us. Their disrespect leads me to be angry which just starts the cycle over again. How can I expect them to be happy and obedient when I am angry and disrespectful, makes no sense!
3)Lie- Retreating to my room and hanging out online is my right and there’s nothing wrong with it!! TRUTH- As long as it does not interfere with my responsibility as a wife and mother, it is nothing worng with going online, but when it takes over my day and my children are left to themselves, it is not ok, and it is not my “right”!

Well, I think that’s enough inward reflection for me! I would like to hear what others who have done this study think and even if you have not done this study, what are some lies you have believed??

Is it summer yet?

I would love to hear from some of you moms out there who are reaching burn out stage! I know I am doing the right thing, but I am so ready for the year to be over! We have finished almost everything, it has been a pretty loose year anyway, but I feel like my patience is wearing too thin. I get frustrated too easily over silly things. This is my weakest area, although God has grown me so much over the past year and a half, there is still so much more growth to be had.

Next Year’s Curriculum

So I have alot of work to get next year’s school together but that is ok, I can’t complain as the Lord has blessed us with so many great resources either for free or cheap! I know this is going to sound like alot, and believe me, I am looking forward to the day when I can just get one pkg deal, but for now I am excited!
For Maddie I have ( or will get soon) (1st grade)
Handwriting w/o Tears My Printing Book (if you have any leads on a used TM, let me know)
Language Lessons for Little Ones V3 (found this secondhand unused $12, the same lady had LL Elementary for same price so I went ahead and got that one as well)
Singapore Math we are still working our way through 1A, will need 1B @ some point next year.
15 readers I found online for $13 (used)
Logic- I am using several freebie ebooks from TOS and also a feww Highlights puzzlemania books.
For TT:
I bought My Father’s World Kindergarden (basic pkg) used $40
Handwriting w/o Tears Prek I might get the wkbk to do with her again because I did not have the sense to make copies the first time and I do not feel she is ready for the Kindergarden book.
Picture Study- either abcgallery.com or Come Look With Me books, not sure yet, she really enjoyed LLLO V1 but not ready for V2.
MAYBE- Developing the Early Learner series and BTS Beginnings from Critical Thinking ( not at the same time, one per semester)

For both:
Creation unit study, given to me, This was written from a Seventh Day Adventist perspective and some of the things in the beginning and end are pretty weird IMHO, but the 7 day creation is great and goes into alot of detail with suggested experiments and activities. I have added many other resources to my binder so this should make for a really fun learning experience. I think it will fit well with MFW K, although I have to admit it will take alot of work on my part to get it all together. This is the direction God has led me though, so I think I am going to be learning patience!
Latin- I can’t remember the name but it is the cd and TM with the monkey on it. DH is quite sure that Latin is very important and he has agreed to this fun version for now! I found this on ebay, won for $16 with shipping compared to $44 + shipping new.

I would love to hear your thoughts.

You know those “Easter Eggs” on dvd’s and stuff?  Where they hide little “extras”?  Well, I just found out this morning that Currclick has done that on their site ,I don’t know for how long so hurry over.  Their are 18 freebies hidden on the site, in about 15 minutes this morning I found 4 or 5.  It’s not just lapbooks either, I got math games and other things as well.  Click on the button below, open an account if you don’t already have one, and then start looking for the eggs.  I will give you one hint, go down the left hand sidebar and just start clicking on the different links.  When it takes you to the page, make sure you go all the way down to the bottom.  Come back and let me know how many you found!

I had to remove my affiliate link due to wordpress.com being a big brother, check out my regular link on the sidebar.
